Meet some of our other animals

Living in the country here in Crete it is virtually impossible not to gather a number of animals. Stray dogs are a big problem here. People give various reasons as to the number of homeless dogs but who knows the truth? Our neighbour told us that at certain times of the year hunting dogs who have outlived their usefulness are brought up to the villages and set free. We have certainly witnessed that. Sometimes they are left free and sometimes they are tied to a tree or a post. Of course the villagers do not like these dogs roaming the area as hungry dogs attack goats sheep and chickens.

Spitha

This  puppy followed us to our olive fields one day. She happily curled up on the nets and at the end of the day followed us home where we had to give her food and shelter. She has been with us for three years now. She loves children and gets very excited when we have visitors. She had one ear cut off before we found her.

Wiggy

For two days we heard whimpering sounds and could not make out where they were coming from. Spitha found this tiny little black dog hiding under a tree next to our chickens. She was shaking and crying. We called her Wiggy as her tail never stops wagging.

Best of friends!

Mr Red

This beautiful dog used to sit under a tree by the side of the road as if he was waiting for his owner to return to him. We would take him food and water but he would not come anywhere near us. He and another dog managed to get into our chicken run and kill a few chickens but still he escaped from me. Two months later we found him fallen into the stone water trough where the freshwater spring is. He had been shot and blinded in one eye. We caught him and bathed his wounds but then he was off again. Nearly 5 months after he first appeared in the village he started to follow us at a safe distance and then decided he would come and sleep outside our house. He is now the most beautiful and affectionate dog and is slowly learning to trust other people.

And of course, Rhea the goat, Bobby the bunny and other coming shortly!
