RESCUE DONKEYS AND HORSES NEED GUARDIAN ANGELS

Every rescue donkey and horse cost us at least 100 euros every month in food bills alone. On top of this there is medication, vet bills and burial costs. We are therefore asking that you may consider being a guardian angel.

Every equine needs a number of guardian angels at a cost of just 15 euros a month.

POLLY (May 2011) R.I.P. POLLY - 2015

Picture
We collected Polly from her stable in the village of Prina in May 2011. We suspect that she haD been in the stable for a long time and was very very thin. But she is very friendly. She haD scars on her face from ill -fitting tack and long front feet. But she is enjoying her new found freedom and food!

LOLA

Picture

We found Lola tied in her stable in a nearby village. Her feet are very overgrown but the main concern is her utter  obesity. She is now living with the other ladies at the sanctuary and we  the exercise she is getting has helped her to reduce weight.

Lola is best friends with Polly and Isabella.

NICOLI

Picture
Nicoli was bought from the Lassithi plateau as a working donkey, but his owner realised that he had a big problem and could not have a big saddle on his back without collapsing. He has problems with both his hips and also tendon problems.

ISABELLA

Picture
Isabella came from ierapetra where somebody realised they could no longer look after her. She had very long feet, had suffered laminitis and had a wound on her hock (a summer sore).

She is best friends with Lola and Polly

DORA

Dora is the third donkey we have rehomed from the traditional olive oil farm, a tourist attraction in Agios Nicolaos. Dora is a young donkey but has become obese and also suffers badly from fly allergies. She has settled very well here and the cooler climate in the mountains seems to suit her

SAM

Picture
We found Sam in a small dark stable where we suspect he had been kept for a long time. He is very underweight and bears numerous scars from previous injuries.

He was very over excited when he came to the sanctuary and saw all the other donkeys. But after just over a week he calmed down enough so that he was able to integrate safely.

He is so enjoying his new life.

Sam has not been properly castrated and has to have his own special place to live, the other side of the fence from the 'ladies'.

NODDY (September 2014)

Picture
We found this village donkey tied by his foot on a short rope, to a tree. There was no food or water available. The owner no longer wanted him and had left him here. He was very frightened and it was a long time before we could approach him.

He has settled well at the sanctuary and is totally in love with Big Evi and follows her everywhere. He is still very wary of strangers.

Beautiful big Evi joined us from the village of Kroustas. Her lady owner became to unwell to look after and insisted that she came to us for a safe retirement. She is a fit and healthy donkey who is very affectionate

She is very popular with all the boys and currently is loved by Noddy.

ADONIA (June 2014)

Picture
This little girl came from the village of Malles where she had been used as a working donkey. The owner realised that she was too old to work and came to visit the sanctuary to see if we would give her a good home. She is a very long haired donkey with beautiful markings. In the summer months we had to clip her coat so that she would not get too hot in the intense heat of August.

BACCA (December 2013) R.I.P. died February 2015

Picture
Bacca came to us from the village of Malles. His owner got a younger donkey and wanted us to take this old boy.

This donkey has settled so well at the sanctuary. He loves to follow us around very closely while we are cleaning the fields.

CARMA (August 2014)

Picture
Carma came all the way from Kato Zakros, a 6 hour round and difficult trip. She was kept as a pet donkey but had been allowed to become extremely obese. She has many problems although she is not an old donkey. Her vision is impaired and she has extreme pruritis resulting in self mutilation. She needs a lot of care and medication every day

LILIANNA (November 2014)

Picture
Lilianna came to us from the village of Malles. She was no longer fit enough to work as she suffers from arthritis in her knee and shoulder joints.

A lovely gentle donkey with huge ears.

Although Lilianna could hardly walk when she arrived she is now feeling much better.

MR JANSEN THE MULE

Picture

When we rescued Zak the donkey (sadly no longer with us) we had to leave behind a very sad mule that was chained by his foot to a bush with no food or water. The owner would not let us take the mule. Some dutch friends of ours who live in that village took food and water to the mule whenever they could. Nine months later we received a phone call saying that the owner wanted us to take the mule. We had only one week to build a new shelter for him and make a safe enclosure to house him until he gets used to all the donkeys. BUT WE DID IT! We are hoping that Mr Jansen will become our Dutch mascot mule and attract a lot of supporters from Holland with his Dutch name!

Here he is pictured playing with a 'snack ball toy' just three days after his arrival at our sanctuary.

ANASTASIA

Picture
Ana came to us from the village of Malles. She was tied tightly in a dark building a metre deep in manure. She is a very big and strong donkey

OUR RESCUE HORSES

ECHO (August 2011)

Picture
We have called this mare Echo. She was found tied up with no shade, water or food. Close by her were the rotting carcasses of two other horses that were still tied to trees. We visited her twice a day to feed and water her for one month before we were able to bring her to safety. She is doing really well. In April 2012 she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.

ULLY ..(Ulyseus)(July 2011)

Picture
We were informed by villagers that there was a foal roaming free in an area close to the village of Kalamafka. It took us four days of searching this huge area before we found this tiny orphan foal - 6-8weeks old . We had found 2 dead horses a few days before that were tied to trees. We assumed (rightly) that one was his mother. He was being cared for by a young stallion. After spending a week teaching him to eat and drink goats milk he was tame and strong enough for us to walk him 2 kms up a dirt track and load him onto the trailer. We could not have done this without the help of horse trainer Steve Vergis.

Ully is now a big strong boy coming up to 3 years of age.(March 2014)

PETALOUTHA (born at the sanctuary April 2012)

Picture
And here is our miracle. In April 2012 Echo gave birth to this beautiful baby girl. We only knew 2 days before that she was definitely pregnant although a couple of vets had said 'maybe'. She is a delight and Echo is a wonderful mother

GEORGE

Picture
George, a 3/4 bred Cretan pony, had been living inside a small stable for many months. His hooves were overgrown and the chain on his headcollar had grown into his nose causing a nasty wound which was covered in flies. His owner was too frail to take George out of his stable and into the fresh air. Thankfully he contacted us and asked for our help. George is now relearning how good it feels to have the sun on his back. He was born in 2002 (approximately)
